About the Program

What We Do

The MCS department brings together a diverse group of faculty and students engaged in creation and analysis of media and culture, from live streaming to documentary reportage.

The MCS major and minor equip students to explore forms of media and cultural production and gain skills in media production (video editing, design, sound design, podcasting, photography, etc.).

Students understand how media and culture construct and represent gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, and culture and influence public discussions of inequality, representation, sustainability, and empowerment.

They analyze the political and economic forces that shape global flows of media and cultural content.

MCS graduates go into careers in technology and digital media production, global entertainment, social justice and media advocacy, and pursue graduate education.

Meet the Professors!

MCS faculty are globally recognized for their innovative, interdisciplinary scholarship and creative practices.

Faculty are scholars and researchers, artists, performers, writers, architects, composers, gamers and filmmakers.

For example, they study the interconnection between climate crisis, debt culture, and institutional violence; they explore antiracism, decolonization, the built world, and popular culture as sites of ongoing struggle for political meaning.
